The 49er opened May 3, 1956 on what was then Indiana Route 49, giving the theater its name. A single-screen 500-car classic in the Indiana Dunes region, it has earned recognition as one of America's top ten drive-ins and received the Indiana Governor's Half Century Award in 2025.
